Job Details

JOB TITLE: Consultant Geriatric and General Medicine
GRADE: Consultant
DEPARTMENT: Older People’s Services
ACCOUNTABLE TO: Clinical Director
REPORTS TO: Clinical Lead

This whole-time appointment is based at one of our clients in Suffolk. Qualifications required are MRCP or equivalent, full GMC registration and preferably, inclusion on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council.

Applications are invited for enthusiastic, motivated and committed individuals to join our friendly and dynamic team within Older People’s Services at the trust and community services. This is a replacement post following the retirement of one of our colleagues and the opportunity to join an energetic team of professionals providing general geriatric and specialist Movement Disorder services for patients at the trust

Summary of offer
Consultant Geriatric Medicine and General (internal) Medicine with specialist interest in Movement Disorders

Qualifications required
MRCP or equivalent, entry on the specialist register for geriatric medicine

The successful candidate will cover 14 patients on the ward which is part of our Suite complex geriatric service, this is supported by a Trust Grade doctor, CMT and two FY1 doctors, the post holder will be the clinical supervisor of some of these juniors. This will involve a daily consultant led board round (may be shared), weekly MDT meeting and monthly clinical governance meeting. The post holder will be expected to provide appropriate clinical leadership to the progressive, innovative multidisciplinary ward team, in conjunction with the other consultant and ward sister.

There will be two Movement Disorder clinics each week. One is based on one site, this is supported by a SpR and specialist nurse and is a training opportunity for the CMT. Patients seen by other members of the team may need a joint review, the structure of the clinic has been reviewed following the Covid pandemic and is currently a mixture of face to face, telephone and Attend Anywhere appointments (video consultation) and has the ability to flex mode of assessment based on clinicians judgement. The second clinic is community based at another site – these are currently consultant only clinics but we hope to expand to SpR in the future, depending on room capacity and pandemic precautions. The clinics have 1-2 new patient slots and 3-4 follow ups (less in the community clinics to allow time for travel within the 4 hour session).

There are two Parkinson’s specialist nurses whose workload is split between inpatients and outpatients, they automatically review every patient with Parkinson’s who is admitted to the hospital and provide emergency support to ED through liaison with the frailty interface nurses. They support the Consultant in outpatient clinics and run education clinics independently. They see most inpatient referrals initially, requesting consultant joint reviews as necessary. There are plans for both nurses to become independent prescribers allowing further expansion into nurse delivered services. Now is a great time to join our service with a Parkinson’s Service Review starting to support our development of a high quality service, making the best use of specialist resources and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future of the service.

This post can include a slot on the general medicine on call rota. This is 1 in 8 weekends – 1 day only, there is a 12 hour shift in EAU reviewing patients admitted acutely, then availability overnight from home if needed. This is supported by an acute on call junior team and 2 medical SpRs during the day with a Hospital at Night scheme overnight. The successful candidate will have the option of joining this rota if they wish to.
